GOLD COAST: Work has started on a $100 million redevelopment of the Gold Coast Airport terminal, which is scheduled to be completed by March next year.

Its terminal will double in size to about 28,700sq.m. to cater for forecast passenger growth over the next 10 years, reports the Gold Coast Tourism newsletter.

Upon completion, the terminal will be Australia’s largest specifically designed for low-cost airlines and their passengers.

There will be 36 check-in desks, self-service kiosks, a single baggage collection and screening point, and a main departures and arrivals area.

Also included is an expanded check-in designed for oversize baggage as well as double baggage capacity and expanded inspection amenities.

Natural light and open, high ceilings will be features with two-storey floor-to-glass windows with vistas across the runway to the hinterland.

There will also be a retail and dining area, while the duty-free area will be 30% bigger.
