BANGKOK, April 8: A Bangladeshi man who took out a knife to cut an apple caused a Bangladeshi plane to make an emergency landing in Bangkok today.
The 25-year-old will not face charges over the incident although airport authorities in the region are expected to be asking how he came to carry the knife aboard the plane.
The incident occured on a GMG Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur to Dhaka, although there is some confusion as to the aircraft's owner and colours.
Initial reports from India and Bangkok caused widespread confusion claiming a Malay man had been attempting to hijack the plane. Other reports said there had been a fight between a knife-wielding passenger and the plane's crew. Most reports said the man was arrested when the plane landed.
However, Thai police Bangkok commander Major General Worrasak Nopsittiporn, said the man had taken out the knife to cut an apple, and had not caused any disturbance. He would not be charged with any offence.
"He didn't try to harm anyone," Worrasak told AFP. The man was taken to Suvarnabhumi International Airport this afternoon to continue his journey to Dhaka.
Chana U-Sathaporn, president of Airports of Thailand told a press conference today: "This is not a hijacking or terrorism. The pilot asked for an emergency landing just to be safe."
